Abingdon School: This is a boys day and boarding (from age 13) school for 1276 pupils aged 4 to 18. Children wishing to start at Abingdon in Year 7 (age 11-12) take 11+ exams in January of Year 6 (aged 10-11). The subjects tested are English, Maths and Reasoning. The Reasoning test is computer based and the Maths and English are on paper. The 11+ English Paper 1 (45minutes) is a response to two prose passages (multiple choice) and also tests grammar and spelling. English Paper 2 (30minutes) is a composition (essay) to assess writing skills. Children can choose whether they write a descriptive, narrative or discursive piece. The 11+ Maths paper (50 minutes) will have questions on fractions, decimals, averages, percentages, coordinates, sequences, perimeters, areas, nets, currency and ratios. Calculators are not permitted. The 11+ Reasoning paper consists of 3 sections and lasts a total of 45mins. The tests assess verbal, numerical and pattern skills, and each test section starts with a set of 6 practice questions. Following the 11+ exams, children are invited for interview. This is designed simply as a chance for the school to get to know the child. The decision on whether a place is offered depends on the exams, the interview and a report from the child's current school. 13+ entry consists of exams in October of Year 7 in English, Maths and Reasoning. An interview and report are also required. 16+ entry is based on tests in November, interviews and predicted GCSE grades. An average grade 6 is required across all GCSEs with a 7 or 8 required in A-Level subjects. Overseas candidates who have English as a second language will need to take an English grammar test. The exams may be taken at their current school and a Skype interview arranged. Scholarships are available with separate entrance exams. https://www.abingdon.org.uk/first_year_admission
