City of London School for Boys
City of London School for Boys: This is a day school for over 900 boys aged 10 to 18. There are 4 main entry points: 10+, 11+, 13+ and 16+. 10+ works for boys mature for their years who are already keen to be in a secondary school environment with specialist teachers and the wide range of facilities available. There is space for 40 boys at this stage. Boys sitting 10+ will take entrance examinations in English, Maths and Verbal reasoning in the January of Year 5. An interview and report from the current school is also required. 11+ entry offers a further 60 places, the majority filled by boys at state primary schools. Around 400 children apply for these 60 places. One route is for full fee or Scholarship places and the other is for means-tested awards of 100% bursaries. Scholarship awards are currently £250 per year. There is a qualifying computerised test prior to the main exams taken in November of Year 6. If a high score is achieved the main tests in the 11+ exams are English, Maths and Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning. Exams are in January of Year 6. To be clear, these are not ISEB 11+ Common Entrance Exams but rather papers created by City of London School. An interview and report from the current school is also required. For 13+ entry, there are 40 places. This is designed for boys at prep schools. They will need to have taken the Pre-test in the Autumn term of their Year 6 (age 10-11). The subjects examined in the pre-test assessments are English, Maths and Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The Reasoning is computer-based and the English and Maths are on paper. A conditional place can then be offered but will be dependant on acceptable standards in the ISEB 13+ Common Entrance Exams at the end of Year 8 (age 12-13). A minimum of 70% is expected in all subjects at Common Entrance. Boys cannot be registered for both the 11+ entry and the 13+ entry, even though 11+ and pre-tests are both sat in Year 6. Parents have to choose. Entry at 16+ for A-Level, there are 12 to 15 places. At least 6 GCSEs at grade A* or 8/9 including in the subjects chosen for A-Level. English and Maths GCSE must be at least a grade 7 or higher. There are no special arrangements for overseas candidates and all exams must be taken at City of London School.
