James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS)
James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS): This is a day school for 1077 girls aged 4 to 18. Entry to the junior school is either at 4+ or 7+. 11+ entry consists of a pre-selection test in the autumn term of Year 6. This involves questions on verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths. If successful the 11+ exam papers will then be taken in January of Year 6. There is a 45-minute maths paper and a 1 hour 15 minutes English paper testing meaning and understanding, the effects of language and the ability to respond creatively. This is not the ISEB 11+ Common Entrance but an exam created by JAGS. There are no interviews unless invited to the scholarship exam. 13+ deferred entrants are also assessed in Year 6 but stay at their current school until year 9. 16+ entry to the sixth form is based on an interview, reference, GCSE results and an entrance exam involving critical thinking. Scholarships are available between £1000 and £4000 per year. Overseas applicants outside of Europe may take the exam at their own school but the school does not sponsor students for visas.
